Today’s stage of the Kerry Group RAS Mumhan was an action packed affair with the story of the race changing at all the vital points on the gruelling Kenmare – Beara Peninsula – Healy Pass –Kenmare Circuit that included none less than five King of the Hill Summits.
Timmy Barry from the powerful Aquablue squad led home a break of five in a fast sprint from another former winner, Dutchman Dennis Bakker in the colours of Killorglin Credit Union CC with the aggressive Con Collis third from UCD. Fourth was the new Yellow Jersey holder Harry Sweering of West Fresia Cycling Team with fifth was Iverks Produce Carrick Wheelers Martin Mizgajski after his great efforts out on the road.
Others to feature strongly were Paidi O Brien from the Planet Tri team who lost contact with the break due to a mechanical problem, Colin Parry (Primal Europe) finished just after the break and Eoin Morton from UCD who led in the second group on the road which contained the yellow jersey of Damien Shaw (Aquablue)
The action now moves to South Kerry with a stage that starts and ends in Waterville and takes in Cahirciveen, Valentia and most neighbouring areas in a 142 kilometer stage. There are many riders within four minutes of the yellow jersey so it is all to play for over the next two days of the tough Kerry roads so Harry Sweering and his West Fresia team have it all to do to defend the jersey until Mondays finish in the town of Killorglin.
The Mountain classification is being led by Timmy Barry from Higgins Felt Colbornes and Shaw third.
