The Yellow Jersey, the one everyone wants to wear! For most, the fabled yellow jersey, or as they say in France “Maillot Jaune“, stands above all else, as it designates the rider who leads the General Classification. After each stage, officials calculate who has the fastest time across the entire race and the jersey then goes to the rider with the shortest overall time.
The Green Jersey, also known as the “Maillot Vert“, is worn by the rider leading the points classification. Points are awarded for winning sprints at stage finishes. The rider first across the line will receive the maximum allocation, with points awarded all the way down to the 10th rider.
The Polka-Dot Jersey. (Maillot à Pois Rouges) is awarded to the “King of the Mountains”, the rider who leads the pack in Mountains Classification. Points are distributed to riders who reach the summit first in designated climbs of each stage. The KoM competition comes into its own once the race heads into the mountain stages on Day 2 and Day 3
The White Jersey, better known as the “Maillot Blanc” on the continent, goes to the General Classification leader who is 23 years old or younger on January 1st in the given race year. Simply put, it goes to the best young rider with the lowest overall time and is expected to be hotly contested by the young, ambitious all-rounders in the race.
The Red Jersey, also known as the “Maillot Rouge” in Munster, goes to the General Classification leader who is in the Junior category. The Jersey goes to the best Junior rider with the lowest overall time and again is expected to be hotly contested by these fearless future stars.
The Navy Jersey, known as the “Maillot Marine” just to keep in line with the rest, goes to the General Classification leader who is in the A2 category. The Jersey goes to the best A2 rider with the lowest overall time and again is expected to be hotly contested.
The Orange Jersey, simply known as the “Maillot Orange“. The second year this jersey will be awarded and will go to the General Classification Leader who is in the A3 category. The Jersey goes to the best A3 rider with the lowest overall time and only the very best in this category will be in contention.
The Blue Jersey. The “Maillot Bleu” will be awarded at the end of each days racing to the stage winner. This jersey can be won by anyone as it is open to all categories. This adds an extra element and incentive to race for those no in contention for the leaders jerseys.
